throughout the nation.Summary DescriptionThe Trauma Nurse
Practitioner (NP) is an advanced practice nurse who utilizes
advanced knowledge and clinical expertise to perform services
enhancing the efficiency of trauma services. The Trauma nurse
practitioner facilitates care for patients who are traumatically
injured. Diagnostic reasoning, advanced therapeutic interventions
and education are key elements in the provision of care using a
collaborative model. The Trauma NP works in collaboration with
physicians as a member of the multidisciplinary trauma team. The
Trauma NP provides care to the trauma patient using advanced skills
in physical exam, diagnosis and treatment. The Trauma NP writes
medical orders (medications, tests and invasive procedures) and may
perform invasive procedures and perform or assist with surgical
procedures. The Trauma NP also functions as a consultant, educator,
researcher and resource for patient, families, community, nursing
personnel and other health care providers. The Trauma Nurse
Practitioner promotes system changes to enhance quality of care and
organizational effectiveness/efficiency and actively participates
on the Trauma Quality Improvement Process (TQIP), State of Michigan
Trauma Quality Process Improvement (M-TQIP) Committee and trauma
program quality assurance initiatives; conducts/utilizes research
to promote health and improve health care delivery. The Trauma NP
assumes responsibility for own professional development.Appropriate
privileges are required to provide patient services, prescribe
pharmacological and perform medical interventions. The Trauma Nurse
Practitioner obtains and maintains in good standing privileges to
practice within the Detroit Medical Center as an Allied Health
Professional through the Detroit Medical Center Medical Staff
Organization.
- PRACTICE. The Trauma NP provides patient services which enhance
the quality and efficiency of patient care, all in support of but
not in lieu of, physician services. None of the Trauma NP's
services will include services billable by the physician team.
- Identifies appropriate trauma patients upon referral and orders
the initial trauma evaluation. Assesses the health status of
patients through performing preliminary health histories,
performing physical exams and analyzing data to formulate
diagnoses. Develops prioritized, comprehensive problem list and
prioritizes/prescribes interventions and diagnostic tests in
collaboration with a physician or according to established
protocols. Consistently collects patient data, which is prioritized
according to the patient's immediate needs.
- Monitors trauma outcomes to meet performance standards required
by the American College of Surgeons-Trauma (ACS), DMC and personal
expectations. Contributes to the plan of care developed in
collaboration with the patient, family, the multidisciplinary
trauma team and other health care professionals
- Prescribes and implements trauma interventions identified in
the interdisciplinary plan of care.
- Performs patient visits according to patient condition, no less
frequently than daily, to evaluate and document patient progress,
in addition to physician visits.
- Acts as a patient/family advocate to ensure trauma care
services are delivered in an ethical and culturally sensitive
manner. Assesses the patient's emotional and social status at
visits and refers to psychosocial team when needed during and
post-traumatic event.
- Performs medication reconciliation.
- EDUCATION
- Provides Trauma education opportunities to develop and enhance
performance, problem-solving and critical thinking skills of
nursing staff.
- Educates nursing staff and other health care providers in the
development, implementation and evaluation of trauma teaching
strategies for patients/families.
- Instructs patients/families/caregivers about medical condition,
post trauma management, follow-up care, medications, illness
prevention, health promotion, coping strategies. The intent is to
increase knowledge and the ability to manage the traumatic event
and maximize coping strategies for patients,
families/caregivers.
- Precepts, teaches, coaches and mentors students, nurses and
other health care providers on the spectrum of trauma care.
- RESEARCH
- Conducts trauma-related research independently or in
collaboration with other nurses and/or other disciplines within the
trauma center consistent with employer's research policies.
- Analyzes and disseminates relevant trauma nursing research.
Applies trauma research findings in clinical setting to improve
practice in the field of trauma.
- MANAGEMENT/LEADERSHIP
- Acts as an independent practitioner. Utilizes independent
judgment to effectively recommend changes in clinical practice
and/or prescription of nursing interventions in patient care.
- Utilizes continuous quality improvement to recommend system
changes with trauma care. Integrates clinical and management trauma
skills with fiscal responsibility.
- Provides proactive leadership to attain excellence in clinical
nursing practice and quality patient care at the trauma department,
divisional and organizational levels.
- Supervises clinical practice to ensure effective, efficient
quality trauma care delivery
- Demonstrates knowledge of and compliance with trauma
policies
- PROFESSIONAL
- Maintains current knowledge and clinical expertise of trauma
care through ongoing involvement in professional activities.
Engages in collaborative appraisal of professional practice.
- Acknowledges and evaluates ethical considerations with trauma
patients. Assures informed consent.
- Models professionalism and positive guest relations. Engages in
activities that enhance/advance the profession of nursing as it
relates to trauma. Sets professional trauma goals and demonstrates
achievements.
- Position will be 100% dedicated as the Trauma Nurse
Practitioner and will be supporting all patients in the trauma
service line.COMPLIANCE STATEMENTSupports the standards set forth
in the DMC Code of Conduct by creating an atmosphere of commitment
to legal and ethical standards, and as directed, implementing
external and internal audit recommendations. Monitors activities to
ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations TJC
requirements, and DMC policies and procedures.

Qualifications
- Registered nurse licensure to practice in the state of
Michigan.
- State of Michigan Nurse Specialty Certification as a Nurse
Practitioner.
- Master's degree in nursing from an accredited nurse
practitioner training program.
- Two years clinical experience as a professional nurse.
- Prefer three years trauma experience and be (ATLS) Advance
Trauma Life Support trained within 6 month of hire and remain
current.
- National certification in advanced practice nursing specialty
from one of the following certification bodies:
- American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC)
- National Certification Board of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners
and Nurses (NCBPNPN)
- American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP)
- Eligible for approval of privileges to practice within the
Detroit Medical Center as an Allied Health Professional through the
Detroit Medical Center Medical Staff Organization. Application for
Allied Health Professional credentialing must be submitted to the
Detroit Medical Center Medical Affairs Office upon hire.
- Prior to obtaining privileges through the Detroit Medical
Center Medical Staff Organization, the Trauma nurse practitioner
may:
- Provide clinical services to trauma patients under the direct
supervision of a nurse practitioner, who has obtained privileges
through the Detroit Medical Center Medical Staff Organization, or
the attending physician.
- Prescribe medications and treatments, and order diagnostic
tests as a delegated responsibility from the attending physician.
The orders will be written as verbal orders and must be co-signed
by the supervising nurse practitioner or attending physician within
24 hours.
- In accordance with State of Michigan administrative rules
R338.10403, "Only nurses certified in a nursing specialty field may
hold themselves out to the public as nurse specialists using the
title nurse anesthetist, nurse midwife, or nurse practitioner.
Conduct contrary to this rule is deemed a violation of sections
16221(g) of the act." Therefore, prior to obtaining national
certification in an advanced practice nursing specialty and State
of Michigan Specialty Certification as a Nurse Practitioner, the
title nurse practitioner may not be used and newly graduated nurse
practitioners will be hired under Graduate Advanced Practice Nurse
